Fairy Child

Jack could tell someone was in his office. It was after midnight, the witching hour. Jack held the Webley in both hands, approaching the door cautiously. He kicked it open to confront the intruder, barrel unwavering in his hands.

It was Jasmine, sitting on his desk kicking her heels. "Hello, Captain Jack. I've been waiting for you."

He put his gun down. "A friendly visit from the fairy child?" he said dryly.

She nodded. "You're my friend. You're the only mortal who ever listened to me."

"I'm not mortal."

"I'm not a child."

"No," agreed Jack. "You never were."
