Rose

Gwen didn't know what the music was called, but it was Glen Miller on the Hub's radio.

Jack stopped whatever he was doing. With a graceful motion, he held out his hand, smiling. "May I have this dance?"

They waltzed together there in the Hub, among alien toys, high-tech sensors and surround-sound. His hand was warm on her back.

He loved 1940s music. In his eyes was the memory of faraway magic and bittersweet loss. So Gwen whispered, "Who is it, Jack? Who are you thinking about?"

"Rose," said Jack softly, his lips brushing her hair. "Her name was Rose."
