Toshiko caught Captain John loitering about the Plass, broke, armed and dangerous. "You can't stay here," she told him.

"Free world," said John.

She wanted to think he smiled at her, but it was a leer. "What do you want?"

"Jack."

"He won't see you."

"Then have a drink with me, if he won't. C'mon, love. We can talk."

"Why should I?"

"Because I can tell you about him. And because you understand about loving someone who doesn't want you."

"You're too smart," said Tosh.

"And cute," said John.

He was. Tosh surrendered. "Just one drink, then."

She had two.
